The way that i sent mine out (this was 2 years ago) was that i sent actual announcemnets to family memebers(aunts,uncles, grandparents ect.). We sent invitations only to the open house/party to friends,friends of the family. But we sent them out at the same time. And yes, put the invitation in with the announcement.
